Guide to regulations and standards for automatic gates and motorized doors

Standards and Guidelines for the Conformity of Motorised Gates and Automatic Doors

The design, construction and marketing of motorised gates and doors is regulated by a set of Technical Standards, Directives and Regulations published by the European CEN. These regulatory instruments guarantee the safety of installations and legal compliance in all member states of the European Union.

Regulations

European Regulations are legislative acts that are immediately binding in all member states, do not require national transposition and have the force of law. One example is the (EU) Construction Products Regulation 2024/3110, which regulates the CE marking for construction products, including certain types of doors and gates.

Directives

European Directives set general safety, health and performance objectives. Each member state is obliged to transpose them into national law to ensure that products placed on the market comply with the laws in force, for example: The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Technical Standards

Technical Standards provide the practical and construction criteria for meeting the requirements of Directives or Regulations. They are not mandatory, but their application guarantees presumption of conformity. Among the most important in the sector are EN 12453 (safety in use) and EN 12604 (mechanical requirements).
